Class is in session.

Everyone experiences school differently. Between elementary, middle, high school and college, it’s quickly learned that you’ve just got to buckle in for the ride.

Looking back, there were several popular and/or expected moments in school that have gotta go. In my opinion, these 19 “traditions” need to end immediately. Like, yesterday.

1. Getting the day off for Columbus Day.

I don’t think this needs much of an explanation.

2. Promposals.

They’re getting a little insane at this point.

3. Reenacting the Pilgrims and Native Americans.

We all know what really went down.

4. Sending anonymous Valentine’s Day grams.

Yes, this is my anxiety speaking.

5. Calling younger kids in school rude names.

I was called a scrub in sixth grade and I hated it.

6. Treating fraternity or sorority pledges poorly.

You know who you are.

7. Sadie Hawkins dances.

Ladies should be empowered to ask whenever.

8. Elaborate entrances to school dances.

I saw a video of a girl come out of a coffin because she was “drop-dead gorgeous,” and I’m still not over it.

9. Throwing up caps at graduation.

So many hats EVERYWHERE.

10. Having a designated pajama day.

THIS SHOULD BE AN OPTION ANY DAY.

11. Crowning a king and queen at prom.

I don’t know — I just never saw the point.

12. A school pledge in the morning.

The morning is not for extraneous activity.

13. Secret Santa.

Yes, my anxiety is also the Grinch.

14. The way Black history is taught.

Let’s do better.

15. Awarding someone for perfect attendance.

This is how a grind culture mentality starts.

16. Watching an excruciatingly outdated sex education video.

The flashbacks are too much.

17. Spirit Week.

I’m supporting the extroverted introverts when I say that just the thought of this is exhausting. One day is fine.

18. Competing with other homerooms in school contests.

Homeroom is too early and shouldn’t exist. Period.

19. Taking a class where you have to memorize a speech like the Gettysburg Address.

I can’t even remember what grade I got on my exceptionally mediocre performance.
